Aufgrund zunehmender Spezialisierung können Ausbildungsbetriebe nicht in jedem Fall sämtliche Inhalte des jeweiligen Ausbildungsrahmenplans eigenständig vermitteln. Um dennoch eine vollständige und qualitativ hochwertige Ausbildung sicherzustellen, werden fehlende Ausbildungsinhalte im Rahmen sogenannter überbetrieblicher Ergänzungslehrgänge ergänzt.

Die inhaltliche Grundlage bilden sogenannte Modulkataloge für die Ergänzungsausbildung. Diese wurden in Thüringen gemeinsam von den Koordinierungsstellen, bestehend aus den drei Industrie- und Handelskammern (IHK) und Handwerkskammern (HWK) Thüringen, Firmenausbildungsverbünden sowie Bildungsdienstleistern entwickelt.
